The race for one of the year’s biggest lottery prizes intensified late Wednesday after the lottery Powerball winning numbers produced no jackpot winner, pushing the grand prize to a staggering $1 billion. With players across the United States trying their luck once again, the question reverberating widely on Thursday morning was: did anyone win the Powerball last night?
According to the Powerball authority, no ticket matched all six numbers in the Wednesday night drawing, marking the 40th consecutive draw without a jackpot winner. The jackpot, last won in early September, has now entered the billion-dollar territory for the second time this year.
While the grand prize eluded all participants, the draw did yield notable secondary winners. Three tickets, sold in Maryland, Michigan and New Jersey, each secured a $1 million prize by matching all five white balls. Powerball officials confirmed that smaller rewards, ranging from $4 to $1 million, were also distributed nationwide.
The odds of winning the top prize remain extremely slim, just 1 in 292.2 million, a factor that has contributed to the series of rollover draws. Nevertheless, the growing jackpot continues to draw players to authorized retailers across the United States.
The jackpot’s cash value is estimated at $461.3 million, if the winner opts for a one-time lump-sum payment. Alternatively, the full $1 billion is available through an annual annuity paid over 29 years.
Powerball tickets cost $2 per play, and are available in 45 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The five states that do not participate, Alabama, Utah, Alaska, Hawaii and Nevada, cite reasons ranging from political opposition to low perceived economic benefit.
