STILL HAVE A RS 2,000 NOTE? HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AS RBI SAYS 98.47% HAVE BEEN RETURNED

If you still have a Rs 2,000 banknote, there’s no need to worry. While most of these notes have already been returned to the banking system, they continue to remain legal tender, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The central bank said 98.47% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes that were in circulation when their withdrawal was announced on May 19, 2023, have now been returned.

Only Rs 5,451 Crore Worth Of Rs 2,000 Notes Still In Circulation

The total value of ₹2,000 notes in circulation has dropped from Rs 3.56 lakh crore in May 2023 to just Rs 5,451 crore as of April 30, 2026, the RBI said.

Although banks stopped accepting deposits and exchanges of Rs 2,000 notes on October 7, 2023, you can still exchange or deposit them through the RBI.

What Can You Do If You Still Have A Rs 2,000 Note?

If you are still holding a Rs 2,000 banknote, here are your options:

The note is still valid: Rs 2,000 banknotes continue to be legal tender and can be used as valid currency.

Exchange at RBI offices: You can exchange your Rs 2,000 notes at any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices across the country.

Deposit into your bank account: RBI Issue Offices also accept ₹2,000 notes for direct deposit into your bank account.

Send through India Post: You can mail ₹2,000 notes from any post office in India to any RBI Issue Office through India Post for credit to your bank account.

Why Did RBI Withdraw Rs 2,000 Notes?

The RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023, as part of its currency management exercise. While the notes are no longer being issued, they remain valid, and the RBI continues to provide facilities for their exchange and deposit.
